Mohan Rakesh’s Aashadh Ka Ek Din (आषाढ़ का एक दिन) belongs to the second kind — and it is the play our adult wing is now preparing to bring to the stage. Here is why this landmark of Hindi drama matters, what it is about, and why we chose it.

The Play That Began Modern Hindi Theatre

Written in 1958, Aashadh Ka Ek Din is widely regarded as the first modern Hindi play — the work that moved Hindi drama away from spectacle and towards psychological depth, poetic language, and human complexity. Nearly seven decades later, it remains one of the most performed and most studied plays in Indian theatre. For any serious theatre group, staging it is both a privilege and a test.

The Story

On a rain-washed day in the month of Aashadh, in a quiet Himalayan village, lives Mallika — a young woman who loves the poet Kalidasa with a devotion that asks for nothing in return. When word of Kalidasa’s genius reaches the royal court of Ujjayini, he is summoned to fame, patronage, and power. The play follows what that summons sets in motion: the pull between love and ambition, between the village that made the poet and the empire that wants to own him, between the person one is and the position one is offered. It is tender, painful, and profoundly human — a story about the price of success, paid by the people left behind.

About Mohan Rakesh

Mohan Rakesh (1925–1972) was one of the towering figures of modern Hindi literature — a leading voice of the Nai Kahani movement in fiction and the playwright who gave Hindi theatre its modern voice. His plays, including Aashadh Ka Ek Din, Lehron Ke Rajhans, and Adhe Adhure, are performed across India to this day and remain cornerstones of the Indian stage.
