Our Children’s Theatre Showcase: Three Full-Length Plays Performed Live by Young Actors

At the end of every workshop cycle, the children of Pratham Path Theatre do something most young performers never get the chance to do: they perform full-length plays, on a real stage, in front of a live audience. Not a three-minute skit. Not a group dance. Complete productions with characters, dialogue, costumes, and lights — carried entirely by children. This article explains what our showcases look like, why they matter, and what is coming up next.

Why We Stage Full-Length Plays

Most children’s performances are short and surface-level. A few lines, a quick song, and it is over. We take a different path. Over a full workshop cycle, our young actors build the stamina, focus, and skill to sustain an entire play from beginning to end. This is far more demanding — and far more rewarding. A child who can hold a character across a 30 to 45 minute production has developed real performance ability, not just memorised a few lines. The showcase is where months of training become visible in a single evening.

Every Child Performs

This is the principle that shapes every production we stage. There are no background fillers and no silent extras. Each play is written or adapted specifically for the children in that batch, so that every single child has a meaningful role with real dialogue and genuine stage presence. When a parent comes to watch, they are not searching the back row for their child. Their child is part of the story, with lines to speak and a character to bring to life.

A Range of Stories, Ages, and Languages

Our showcases bring together different age groups, different languages, and different kinds of stories — from original creations to beloved world classics to Indian-language comedies. This variety is deliberate. Younger children thrive with playful, imaginative tales. Older children are ready for more demanding material with layered characters. And staging work in both English and Hindi ensures children connect with stories in the language closest to their hearts. Here are the three productions in our upcoming showcase.

The Storyteller’s Gift (English)

An original Pratham Path Theatre production for our youngest performers. A wandering storyteller arrives carrying the greatest gift of all — the magic of stories. As he shares his tales, much-loved stories spring to life on stage, from a king whose every touch turns to gold to a band of unlikely animal musicians. It is a warm, funny, imaginative celebration of why stories matter, performed by children aged 5 to 8. The play also carries a gentle, modern message about looking up from our screens and rediscovering the joy of a story well told.

The Wizard of Oz (English)

The timeless classic, performed by children aged 9 to 15. Dorothy is swept far from home and sets off down the yellow brick road, gathering the most memorable companions in storytelling — a Scarecrow in search of brains, a Tin Man longing for a heart, and a Lion hunting for courage. Their journey to the Emerald City is full of adventure, humour, and heart, and it carries a message every child understands: courage, intelligence, and kindness were inside them all along. A spectacular, character-rich production that gives older children meaty roles to sink into.

Ujbak Raja (Hindi)

A riotous Hindi comedy for children aged 11 to 15, reimagining one of the world’s most beloved satirical tales. A vain and foolish king, surrounded by flattering courtiers, falls prey to two clever tricksters who promise him the most magnificent royal attire ever made — attire that, of course, does not exist. As the whole court pretends to admire what is not there, it takes the honesty of one fearless voice to reveal the truth. Performed in Hindi with sharp comic timing, the play delights audiences while delivering a timeless lesson about vanity, flattery, and the courage to speak the truth.

What the Audience Experiences

A showcase evening is not a school assembly. It is a genuine theatre experience with stage lighting, costumes, props, and the electric energy of live performance. Audiences are consistently struck by the same thing: the confidence and presence of children they may have known as shy or hesitant. Parents arrive expecting a sweet children’s show and leave having watched real theatre. For the children, performing for a full house of family and friends is a milestone they remember for years — the moment they discovered they could hold an audience.

Our upcoming showcase brings all three productions to the stage in a single evening, performed by children aged 4 to 15 from our current workshop. Families, friends, and theatre lovers are warmly invited. Entry is complimentary, though registration is required as seating is limited.
